Air Force Museum, Shillong
"Military heritage and historic aircraft in Upper Shillong."
Air Force Museum, Shillong is a military heritage museum located at the Eastern Air Command headquarters in Upper Shillong, East Khasi Hills District, Meghalaya, at 1,720 meters above sea level. It showcases the history of the Indian Air Force in the northeastern sector through indoor galleries and outdoor aircraft displays.
Guardians of the Eastern Skies
Situated inside a secure military cantonment, the museum displays vintage fighter jets, including a Folland Gnat and a Hawker Hunter, along with Mi-4 helicopters. The indoor galleries contain rare historical photographs from the 1962 Sino-Indian War and the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War.
Visitors can view miniature aircraft models, military uniforms, insignia, and weapons used by the Indian Air Force. The museum is surrounded by manicured lawns and offers a scenic view of the Upper Shillong hills.
What NOT to Expect
Do not expect free entry without ID verification. Since the museum is located inside an active military base, security checks are strict. Photography is prohibited in certain designated military zones outside the museum compound.
Seasonal & Timing Guide
The museum is open year-round from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, except on Mondays. The best time to visit is during the dry winter months (October to March) when the clear weather allows for pleasant viewing of the outdoor aircraft exhibits.
